Master Study of Richard Schmid flowers

Richard Schmid is a painter and author whom many realist painters admire for his masterful style of vignettes, layering, and color. Okay, there are many more reasons to admire his talent, but those three are the the first to come to mind.  His draftsmanship, edge work, and composition/design are a few more.  A picture of his painting titled, "Peonies", was painted in 2006 plain air and then finished in his studio. Here is my process of studying his painting. I have not yet finished, but since I haven't posted much lately, I thought you might want to see what I have been up to lately. I plan to finish by next week and will post the final of my study.

So, why do I like birds? They sing, no matter who is listening. Many have nice colored plumage, and they flit and fly. Some people say that I eat like a bird, and some people say I have a bird brain! Ha!

A colorful modern abstract oil painting from my "Paper Series" 8x10 on board

For those of you who were wondering about my "Paper Series",  I have not given up on this image type, and you may see more of it later this year.  Here is a playful image of crumpled paper that was fun to paint. Enjoy!  

This is painted with oil paints on board and has a ¾" cradle (frame flush with the edges to allow it to hang on the wall) in natural wood.
