Karin's Knot value study

Hi Karin,  Here is a post of the progress of this painting. This is a basic value study, so is in Black and white. Much of the details and edge work is left out, but it gives you a general idea of what your painting structure looks like. I hope you like it. :-)

Master, Morgan Weistling Study of "Kissing the Face of God".

This painting was completed as an assignment at Watts Atelier.  Lucas Graciano, my instructo,r was helpful and patient since this painting took the whole 10 weeks! Through this study I learned to appreciate the value of taking the time to mix the right color and value. Patience, patience, patience. Mr. Weistling also uses at least three colors in most of his mixes. In this painting, there is a tremendous amount of contrast. Mary's face is much darker than I would have had the guts to paint without his example. Take a look at his website http://www.morganweistling.com

"Paper Series" 2

Multiple sketches. They don't read well after scanning since they are prepared by graphite.  The numbers in the bottom two are my process to reduce the values to five so as to get a simplified graphic read. The top two are more subtle in shading, but less able to communicate digitally.

The background challenge is to go black for a graphic look which would be my tendency since I lean to the contemporary, or the atmospheric background which puts the knot in a space to relate to. The atmospheric background will read more dimensional.

"Paper Series" 1

Karin and Larry Mills have commissioned me to paint a 36" x 36" knot from my paper series for their living room. After hours of taking reference photographs and analysing them on the computer, this is the reference that I have choosen. I liked the combination of straights and curves, together with a composition that I can manipulate for a square image.

Website update not yet!

Updating websites are time consuming, and dollar consuming. I am still waiting for my information from 1 1/2 years of work to be updated on my site.  Bless Mark who is doing a good job. I hope to keep things updated more regularly through this blog.  We'll see.
